Winn Hjalmarson Speaker for Verde River Citizens Alliance

       October 19, 2002 General Meeting

Winn Hjalmarson, retired U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist, was the key speaker at the Verde River Citizens Alliance meeting on Saturday, October 19. Hjalmarson gave a presentation about Verde River sources water issues. He is co-author of the USGS publication Sources of Springs Supplying Base Flow to the Verde River Headwaters, Yavapai County, Arizona. The meeting was held at Dead Horse Ranch State Park.

A portion of the meeting was devoted to recruiting volunteers to support Mingus Union High School teacher Howie Usher's "Stream Ecology" class during the second semester at MUHS. Adults will serve as ongoing aides and student mentors to monitor the health of the Verde River at prescribed sites. This program will give volunteers an opportunity to help both the school and community. All interested adults are invited to participate. Vice-President Steve Kling has agreed to provide the leadership for this VRCA project.

A report was given on an application submitted by the VRCA in early October to the American Rivers organization requesting that the Verde River be classified as one of our nation's ten "most endangered" waterways. The application focuses on the real and immediate threats to the headwaters springs. From documentation and scientific studies, the VRCA considers the two most imminent threats as Prescott's effort to tap into the Big Chino Aquifer and Ranch Community of America's proposal to build 25,000 homes between Seligman and Paulden. In seeking this designation, VRCA hopes to receive statewide and national media attention concerning the threats to the upper reaches of the Verde River.
