Education Committee

The VRCA education and research committee created a brochure providing information about the organization and a bumper sticker. They produced a poster with photos and descriptions of some of the river-related activities in which VRCA members have taken part. The poster is displayed in the VRCA booth during special events such as the Verde Valley Birding Festival and Verde River Days. The education and research committee also provides guest speakers  for VRCA general meetings.

VRCA featured Jim Byrkit, Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University, as a speaker. Dr. Byrkit is a native Arizonan who was born in Jerome and grew up close to the Verde River in Clarkdale. He has spent a lifetime studying the Verde Valley and the river. His talk on the history of the area was both informative and entertaining. He included native peoples of the valley, early Spanish explorers, descriptions of early farming and ranching lifestyles, tales of the copper mining days and the importance of the Verde River to all life in the Verde Valley.

Another featured speaker was retired U.S. Geological Survey Engineer-Geologist-Hydrologist Winn Hjalmarson of Camp Verde who co-wrote an open file USGS report entitled Sources of springs supplying base flow to the Verde River headwaters, Yavapai County, Arizona. The report can be downloaded at:

http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1999/ofr-99-0378/

Since retirement Hjalmarson is an independent consulting hydrologist. He has taught at the University of Arizona as an adjunct professor and served on a committee for the National Research Council. He has 40 years experience with the hydrology of arid lands and fluvial processes. His personal feelings about the Verde River were formed as a child at the magnificent view of the Verde Valley from the rim of Mingus Mountain where his family cabin has been located since 1923.
